My Journey in Massage

With 9 years of corporate and government administration under my belt, I quit an unfulfilling desk job in Ottawa to attend the only massage school in Canada at the time, in Toronto.  A radical step that raised eyebrows.

It was 1978.  There were no spas, no wellness centers.  The word ‘wellness’ hadn’t even been conjured yet and massage was – well frankly – thought of only in connection with the sex trade active in the ‘parlors’ in most large cities.

On graduation, my one option was to start my own practice.  So I did.

It took me a year to drum up the courage to tell people in social settings what I did for a living.  The response was mixed:  some were appalled, many thought it weird but a few were curious and gave it a try.

That really began the journey that continues to inspire and teach me.

The healing power of the work and the many connections I’ve had with highly diverse individuals and health conditions continue to satisfy my desire for a meaningful life.

I love being part of the changes clients make for the better.  For some, their lives are set on a different course that they’ve longed for and – wow – do I love watching them go!

It took me many years to accept the label “healer” that clients often give me but, finally, I have — knowing full well that I am but a catalyst for others to perform their own healing — grateful to be trusted on their journey and appreciative of my personal and professional growth because of that.

I was fortunate early in my career to know a few deeply insightful teachers with whom I recognized the far reaching effects of various forms of touch therapies, beyond just the body, into all the layers and aspects of who we are.

I firmly believe we have within us all that we need to be healthy and strong. The problem is that we are not taught how our bodies work to serve us. Our culture conditions us not to heed our own brilliant mind/body message system that we can always trust to guide us.

The juice that fuels my fire lies in helping anyone who’s interested in using their own power to live with less pain and distress, with more ease, vitality, and enthusiasm – as we were meant to!

I’m often asked what kind of massage and bodywork I practice. It’s a reasonable question… but there’s no definitive label for a lifetime of touch and connection.

All the courses, methods and techniques I‘ve studied along with my interest in whole food, exercise, meditation philosophy and mindfulness have become integral to who I am and the service I offer.

At the foundation is gentleness and a knowing that everything has a place and serves a beneficial purpose, even when it’s painful in the midst of it.  I believe we each have the power within us to heal, to grow, to live in harmony with others and to prosper.

Sometimes we just need a little extra help and guidance.
